EPB-Research – Dick van Dijk
After about 40 years having been employed as scientist at TNO, I retired and I am self-employed (“EPB-Research – Dick van Dijk“).
I am (still) working in the field of research on energy performance of buildings (EPB) and building physics. Mainly:
- Research and standardization related to thermal and solar properties of windows and facades.
- Development and implementation of internationally harmonized calculation procedures on the energy performance of buildings.
The EPB Center
In recent years, most of my activities were dedicated to the development of the CEN and ISO set of energy performance of buildings standards (in ISO: the so called “ISO 52000 family”), using the holistic or systemic approach. To support the European Directive on the energy performance of buildings (EPBD).
At European (CEN) level) this set was completed and published in 2017. About one third of the set has also been published at global (ISO) level.
The next and obvious step is implementation and application of these calculation procedures in the national building regulations, in allEuropean countries, but also outside Europe.
Regulators and other interested parties (supply industry, consultants, builders, designers, ..) need a central organization where they can get technical support and where they can provide feedback. Therefore I initiated the EPB Center, with the help of other key players in the field.
The Center is dedicated to provide stakeholders and interested parties with technical support for the implementation and dissemination of information on the set of EPB standards at national and regional level.
Award
On November 17, 2016, during the symposium at the occasion of my retirement from TNO, I received the NEN-legpenning, the highest available NEN award, from Piet-Hein Daverveldt, NEN managing director.
He stressed the importance of the activities for energy savings in buildings in The Netherlands and abroad.
“Initially in his carreer, Van Dijk has worked to improve the thermal insulation standards; later he coordinated the development of the national energy performance of buildings standard in The Netherlands. In recent years he initiated the development of the Energy Performance of Building (EPB) Standards within Europe and at global (worldwide) level. For ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, Dick introduced the ISO 52000 series of EPB standards, currently becoming a real high profile series.“
